Hedda Sterne, 1938
(American, born Romania, 1910–2011)
Sterne was associated with several major 20th century art movements, including surrealism and abstract expressionism, but her body of work is remembered today for its stubborn independence from styles and trends. During the late 1940s she became a member of The Irascible Eighteen, a group of abstract painters who protested the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exclusionary policy towards contemporary American painting. She was married to cartoonist and illustrator Saul Steinberg. via
